Methane emission management

Methane emission management

Impact of the EU Methane Strategy
With the European Commission’s announcement of adopting a new “Methane Strategy” from the 20th of October of 2020, the European Union took a big step forward towards their commitments with the European Green Deal and Paris Agreement. The communication sets out a strategy for reducing methane emissions, critical for the European Union to have a realistic approach towards fulfilling their established global climate targets. The European Union has made a strong, clear and explicit commitment to fight climate change and become climate neutral by 2050.  With a proposed cut of greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. This would also require up to 37% methane emission reductions by 2030.
In 2021, the Commission will present a legislative proposal on compulsory measurement, reporting and verification for all energy-related methane emissions. In addition, such legislation will include an obligation to improve leak detection and repair (LDAR) of leaks on all fossil gas infrastructure, as well as any other infrastructure that produces, transports or uses fossil gas. LDAR obligations will address flaring efficiency as a priority, in order to tackle emissions from venting and flaring.
